Travel & Hotel
This website project is for the World Food Travel Summit & Food Travel Expo. This is a biennial conference for the food, drink, travel and hospitality industries. There is also a one day consumer expo. Therefore the target audience is both trade and consumer. The event will be held next April 7-11, 2015 in Estoril, Lisbon, Portugal. The event is in English, but any promotions/wording to consumers should also include the Portuguese phrase “amantes das viagens gastronómicas”. (I know it is long, but there is no way to get around making it shorter and still be understood.) The event is produced by the World Food Travel Assciation and APTECE, our chapter in Portugal. You can see a holding page for the event at www.WorldFoodTravelSummit.com that shows the names of our Association and APTECE. Attached is a graphic of our community – 19 sub-sectors in all. These people are our customers and audience. 90% of our customers are industry/trade, just about 10% are consumers and only for the one consumer day.
We like clean lines, exciting pictures of food mixed with plain backgrounds for text. Drink images are fine too. Primary colors should be those from the Summit logo (attached). Complementary colors would be white, brown and maybe some shades of gray. Avoid using pictures that look elitist (like 100% retired white people standing around in front of a Mercedes and huge mansion sipping wine – this would send a very wrong message) The WordPress template we will be using is Legenda on themeforest. The design you submit must be compatible with Legenda and use that template’s best features. Some of these features include: large panoramic pictures; multi-layered/stacked sections (i.e. one long home page that scrolls down). This template also automatically resizes for the website to look good on a mobile device. You will need to spend some time looking at the screenshots of the Legenda template in use as well as its features to understand what it is fully capable of. For example, how it manages photo carousels, social media links/icons for individuals, etc. For more information on the architecture of the website, see the attached mindmap.
HOME PAGE Each layer/level of the main home page needs a title within its own layer/level. That is clearly marked in the mindmap. Within the same level/layer need to be the sub-levels. These are clearly marked on the mindmap with green arrows. These need to fit within each layer – but maybe you scroll left to right, maybe it automatically scrolls, maybe there are boxes to choose from – you have to consider the user’s experience and design something captivating and which is also extremely clear to follow. Besides the hero/top header level, any other mention of “Register Now” needs to be a special, consistent button that people see in every layer as they scroll down. We don’t want to bury information too deep – it needs to be “spoon-fed” to website visitors. SECONDARY FEATURES PAGE – separate carousels on different pages, each carousel featuring our employees, our board members, our strategic partners, our program graduates, our chapters, our ambassadors, etc. This can be the same kind of page for each of these groups (but only one group would appear on one page). The challenge will be how to see many options within each grouping. For example, we currently have 43 ambassadors. So the issue is 1) how to show/search the entire group; and 2) how to show an individual’s full profile (which would include things like name, photo, email, organization, city, country, email) SECONDARY “PRODUCT” PAGE This page shows details on 1 specific product. For example, this could be the Pre-Summit Tour, or another example is draft program. It needs space for a photo, product name, short product description, and testimonial which could be a quote or a video. REGISTRATION PRICING PAGE Needs to show a lot of info. Levels include: World Food Travel Summit (Trade Only) Early-Bird EUR 600 Regular EUR 800 Placeholder 1 EUR 550 Placeholder 2 EUR 750 Exhibition Space EUR 2000 Each of these needs to say what is included – not sure the best way to show a list of benefits for each of these pricing levels. Types of benefits would be things like 1) access to all social and networking events; 2) pre-tour overnight culinary tour; 3) business to business appointments; 4) consumer expo day; 5) exhibitor booth Etc. Consumer Expo (Consumers Only/ Só amantes das viagens gastronómicas) Consumer Entry EUR 12
What to avoid
Serif fonts (sans serif only), colors that do not naturally match the palette, low-resolution screenshots, elitist/gourmet looking pictures, pictures of farms and farming
The user experience of this website is the most important aspect of what you will design. We’ve already done the information architecture (in the mindmap). So in many ways, your job is easy. But you need to understand how someone will go into the website to look at the different pieces of the conference – like the speaker list, the program topics, etc. You just need to design it visually so that it is compelling and exciting. If you were an industry person visiting our website, what would draw YOU in to ask more information and maybe make a purchase? Think about your flow around the website. What would be an exciting and easy way for you to receive the sometimes long lists of information we need to convey.
