Travel & Hotel
I'm looking to cater to group travelers, with an emphasis on what I call volunteer tourism. Volunteer tourism is budget travel with the goal of participating in volunteer work as part of the travel experience. E.g. backpacking in Africa as the travel part, volunteering at orphanages along the way as the volunteer part. My vision is to create a site where backpackers/budget travelers can create a profile, create a travel itinerary, and be part of a community that helps connect them with other travelers and volunteer opportunities. Travelers can publish their plans, look for travel partners, blog about their experiences, and find travel/volunteer opportunities. The volunteer aspect should be supplementary not the main focus. The main focus is on building a community in budget travel.
Marawest.com I helped design this sites colors and theme. I’m partial to earth tone colors and the old safari, worn and torn styling. This is a family site so I’m intending on tying to two together on some level. Jetsetter.com Bright, clear, and vivid. Clean and simple navigation. I don’t like clutter. In today’s world too much information is more often the problem than not enough. TED.com I like the navigation style on the homepage of the collage of pictures that expand to show information about each. Also, the way the talks can be sorted. Appealing and simple yet effective ways to sort and organize. Of course LonelyPlanet.com. The whole theme deals with budget travel and discovering. Globetrooper.com Is very similar to the concept of what I’m going for. Very similar overall purpose. Style and theme is great. Very appealing website. Simple yet effective.
“Homepage” should introduce the concept of budget travel, display a clipping of public itineraries and blogs, and direct people to become members and either create their own trips or browse through other people’s trips and volunteer opportunities. Should have a focus on the global aspect of the site with the ability to link to global regions and corresponding information for that region. “Create Itinerary” page will allow users to create their travel plans. Start/end dates. Whether dates are specific or flexible. Locations they are visiting. What kind of trip it is (bicycle across S. America or public transport through southern Africa). Whether the travelers are looking for travel partners or not and how many they are looking for. The estimated costs and difficulty. A detailed description of the intended trip. What kind of volunteer opportunities they are looking for during their trip. “Find Itinerary” page should display public itineraries. It should be able to be filtered by location and/or trip concept (biking, backpacking, climbing, rail, etc.) and/or volunteer work, if any, being pursued. It should display key aspects of the trip along with pictures. “Blogs” page should display snippets of available blogs. It should allow blogs to be displayed by location (continent, major countries, etc.) and/or by major subject matter (travel experiences, travel advice, technology related, volunteer opportunities/experience, etc.) Possibly a tag cloud letting visitors browse blogs by related tags. “Research” page should introduce the world and allow a breakdown into further and further detail (continents, countries, locations within countries, details about those locations, etc.) These pages will hold text about each layer of detail. They will be cross-linked to the “Create Itinerary” page to allow users to add locations to their itinerary, to the “Blogs” page to allow user submitted blogs be added to location information, and to the “Find Itinerary” page to allows users to see active trips in that location. Should provide for easy navigation up and down the detail levels.
Target audience is going to typically be young adults, of both genders, from many countries (although mostly N. America, Europe, Australia), age 20-35 looking to get out and explore the world and make a difference at the same time. They are going to be traveling on a budget that will involve them using public transport, staying in the cheaper hotels, hosteling, or camping, and a majority will be looking to get off the beaten path. They will be looking for new and unique experiences rather than the typical tourist attractions. They will be looking for a life changing experience with a social aspect to it. Being able to share this experience with old friends through blogging and photography will be important, along with being able to connect and share the experience with new friends met on the path. Feeling like they have made a difference in the areas they have gone will be equally important.
