nick 9H got their new web page design by running a design contest:
Re-design of our Discussions section
Check out nick 9H's Web page design contest…
We help voters learn which candidates, issues, current events, and political parties match their personal political beliefs. Our users are interested in discussing and analyzing politics and current events.
We are adding a "discussion" section to our website. Similar to other message board websites or sites like Reddit, users will be able to select (or create) a topic they would like to discuss, post a comment about the topic, and engage in discussion with those that reply to their comment. Any user may rate topics, comments, and replies. Here is one very important part that makes our site different from other message boards: The main feature of our website is our political quiz. When a user answers our quiz, we (and they) know how their political beliefs match other users (eg: user A matches 86% of user B's beliefs and only 7% of user C's beliefs). We would like to incorporate this feature into the discussion section, so while browsing discussions, users can see how they side with other users in the discussion. Users may also choose to hide comments/replies from users they mostly disagree with, or if they would like to enter a constructive argument they can choose to show comments/replies only from users they disagree with. We encourage you to find creative and interesting ways to integrate this feature into your designs.
The discussion section will consist of the following pages in order of hierarchy: 1. The discussion section homepage. This will suggest popular topics and discussions the user may be interested in. This should feel fresh, current, alive, and fun and encourage the user to join or start a discussion. http://www.cnet.com/uk/ and http://www.usatoday.com/ are good examples of this. 2. Browse topics page. Since users will be allowed to create topics, we will have a large structure of nested topics. We will need a page that will allow users to browse topics. Other features should include the ability to search, create, and follow topics. Any other creative ideas you have for this section are encouraged. We do not have a mock for this yet. 3. Topic landing page. This is where users go to find a discussion about a topic they are interested in. This page should have a large appealing header that displays the topic and a brief description of the topic (preferably with an image). Below the header should be a similar version of the discussion section homepage tailored to the topic. Any creative ideas you have for this section are encouraged. We do not have a mock for this yet. 4. Discussion landing page. Discussions can be about anything (News Story, Person, Candidate, Image, Video, an Issue, etc) that exist within a topic. Discussion content consists of a headline, image (optional), and body text. Authors are rated by the quality of discussions they start and contribute to. We would like to acknowledge and reward authors who submit high quality discussions by making their "about the author" section look like a badge of honor. The better the author, the better their about section should look. Forbes does a good job of highlighting authors http://www.forbes.com/sites/arjanschutte/2015/01/21/insurance-7-trillion-goliath/ Here is an html mockup of a discussion landing page http://www.isidewith.com/discuss/236923647-discuss 5. Reply landing page. Each comment reply will get it's own landing page. Reply content consists of a headline (optional) and body text. This page should look very similar to the discussion landing page, except it should have information about what/who they are replying to. Here is an html mockup of a reply landing page http://www.isidewith.com/discuss/236923647-reply
We like the general layout and design of the html mockups that we did for the discussion and reply landing page, but we would like some creative design ideas on how you could improve upon specific sections of the page (about the author section, parent discussion section, related discussions, comment section, etc) to enhance the aesthetics and usability of features. The pages have a good basic structure but are still a little bland. The discussion section homepage, browse topics page, topic landing page have not been mocked up yet and your creative ideas and features are encouraged. Please incorporate the concepts of users being able to compare beliefs with each other. We can build out any advanced ideas you come up with.
