About the Book: Paris, 2011. Roland Ogier, a famous Russian sports journalist, defected from the Soviet Union shortly before perestroika and has lived in France ever since. For thirty years he has not seen his son Sergey, who he left behind. All of Roland’s attempts to mend relations with his son have failed. That is why now, upon suddenly receiving a letter from Sergey asking for help, Ogier takes a flight to Moscow without delay. However, having got his son back, Roland also discovers him in the middle of the Russian power struggle—the intensity of which is pushed to the limit by the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections. Ogier decides to help Sergey, no matter what it takes. Yet he is still oblivious to how insignificant a human life may be when the stakes involve a vast country’s assets running in the billions of dollars. Frenchman Maurice Duval, Roland’s friend, is similarly oblivious. Having embarked on a trip to Russia to rescue Ogier, he unexpectedly finds the love of his life in this country. Infatuated with a young girl from St. Petersburg, Maurice unwittingly takes chances, not only with his friend’s life but with his own as well. In the meantime, another of Roland’s friends finds himself entangled in this story, American Gregory Maynard, a world-renowned reporter. In anticipation of a sensation, he enters into negotiations with Alexey Kukshin, an up-and-coming Russian politician, who happens to have Roland’s son on his election campaign team. Passions run high as the conflict between those in power and Kukshin’s grassroots movement intensifies. The heroes keep up their struggles, but they have yet to find out that not all of them will be lucky to get out of this ordeal alive. This is a story of human love and inhuman greed. A story of money vested with absolute power. A story of the Last Empire.
