Kara106 got their new print or packaging design by running a design contest:
Book cover wanted for new science series

Book publishing company specializing in geoscience. We sell books to students, academics and professionals in North America, Europe and the rest of the world.
What's your vision?
Eye-catching but stylish book cover required for a book titled "51 things you should know about geophysics". The book is edited by Matt Hall and Evan Bianco. This is the first book in a series of books about geoscience. In this book, there are 51 short chapters written by experts. It is not a stuffy book ... many of the experts are young "stars". We are looking for a strong, clean, uncluttered, intelligent design that can be adapted for future books in the series. I have uploaded some covers from other publishers that appeal to our design aesthetic for reference only. I will be paying very close attention to the type as well as the image so please take care choosing the fonts, font sizes, line spacing, etc. I prefer the idea of illustration on the cover, rather than photography. Illustration ideas could include seismic data (see seismicatlas.org for ideas), waves (any kind of waves), anything to do with geology or the earth. Back cover copy will include a short blurb about the book and a couple of endorsemens. The format is 5.5 x 8.5, paperback. I will attach the corporate logo for the spine.
Worldwide audience but especially Canada and the U.S. We are not looking for a standard, boring science reference book "look". We want something fresh and different and stylish.
Every design category has flexible pricing for all budgets.
Full copyright with production-ready files for digital and/or print.

And then… they selected a winner!
Martis is very talented and gets the needs of the clients very well. He doesn't need much explaining. To be able to make his work more effective he can see if a structured approach to timelines or setting expectations of how long something may take, may help him with his projects. I enjoy working with him and will work with him again if the need arises!
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
