Games & Recreational
This is a word game where users craft definitions for obscure words from the dictionary and their opponents guess the correct definition. It is based on the popular parlour game Dictionary (more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fictionary) . It uses Game Center to connect players.
What do you have in mind for the style and theme of the app?
Given the game has its roots in a traditional dictionary, a possible design direction could evoke the textures, colours and styles of a leather bound dictionary, with gold leaf, finger tabs and so on. The visual style needs to accommodate animations and transitions between game steps and scoring states, so drawing on stylised letters, words and pages could be effective.
The visual design needs to connect emotionally with the user. It needs to feel fun, easy to use but intellectual to play and appeal to 55 year old female word game lovers playing on the couch as well as 20 year old word nerds commuting to university. I'm looking for a design that packs an emotional punch and delights the user every time they open the app.
Game Work Flow
The user is asked to log into the Game Center on the Sign In screen. On a Welcome screen the user is then asked whether they know how to play.
If yes, they are taken to a screen to Select a Level. If no, they are taken to some brief instructions on How To Play.
From the Select a Level page, the user can choose a game to play.
The Define screen presents the user with an obscure word from the dictionary and gives the user 3 minutes to think of and write a credible definition for that word. A timer counts down the time. The user can submit the word any time during the 3 minutes. Once the timer expires, the game compiles entries from opponents. The Guess screen presents the various definitions for the user to pick the official one. The user is given 1 minute to pick. At the end of 1 minute the selection is submitted and the scores are calculated. Scores animate to show whether the user picked correctly and whether opponents picked their definition. The Score Summary page aggregates the score and asks whether the user would like to play again.
Wireframes for all screens are attached as a PDF to this brief for your reference, however only 3 indicative pages need to be designed. Pick 3 screens that you think will showcase your intended design the best. The pages I'm most interested in are:
- Select a level (page 4)
- Define (page 5)
- Compile transition (page 6)
- Score State 2 screens (page 11)
- Score summary you won (page 12).

What to avoid
If your design conjures up a traditional dictionary it shouldn't be considered so old fashioned that it looks dull, unwieldy or stale.
It needs to avoid looking like the apps 7 Little Words and Anagram Twist.
