Beyond Rhetoric Corporation connects volunteers and activities to youth in detention. The goal is to invest in detained youth by, 1) creating a connection that helps at-risk youth detach from the criminal justice system; and 2) give regular joes (and janes) an opportunity to serve a population that has potential and need of human interaction. My audience is middle class, college-educated adults, those with a surplus of time. My industry is Juvenile Justice, but there no menu for that, so I selected "political." While we are educational, I do not want the happy, happy, joy, joy, colorfulness of pre-school, elementary or even secondary schools.
I am very interested in a symbol for Beyond Rhetoric. I want my company to be about the business, not talking about "our brothers and sisters in lock up" and over-articulated treatments of the ills of the "Prison Industrial Complex." Beyond Rhetoric is about what YOU are going to do. In the future, I would also like to use the symbol/logo on a shirt and on merchandise. I wear Brooks Brothers partly because I like it's symbol. I hate the large Polo symbol and prefer the understated Polo symbol. I loved the Le Tigre symbol in the 80s. The Target logo is genius. Adinkra symbols blow my mind. I wish to create a symbol that means, "Let's move beyond rhetoric." With my limited artistic mind, I messed around with a B&R, even though that may be overdone. I tried to make the B&R look like a flower, subtly communicating BR. Once again, I want this image on a coffee mug, and I want them to like it. Lastly, I have bought a lot of stuff from EJI because I believe in their mission. Their logo is a broken chain. That is cool, but, it is not pleasing to the eye. I don't think of a T-shirt. I think of a polo-style shirt. I want people to want to wear the symbol--not necessarily as a symbol of protest, but because they like looking at the symbol. If they wore the polo shirt, with the symbol, a boss would not take umbrage. In years, it would be nice for the symbol to unwittingly transcend its origin, being worn by folks at Martha's Vineyard in New England.
