This project is for Illustration for a Modern Fantasy/Urban Fantasy book cover.
The location is a land-based oil rig (see included photos), though it’s powered down (no lights or movement). It’s winter, and a heavy, grey fog shrouds the top of the rig’s derrick and the background behind it.
A massive Gurgurran (anvil-headed monster, see description below), towering over the two main characters: Nick (short, dark hair, has a scar on his right cheek), and Katrina (slightly shorter, lean build, has mid-length dark blonde hair). Nick and Katrina are looking up at the Gurgurran, in terror and disbelief. Katrina could be collapsed/cowering (artist's discretion).
Description of Gurgurran (some details might not be visible in this illustration but are included for thoroughness):
Skin color of grey granite, it’s 9 feet tall, and covered in sparse hair ranging from off-white to dark grey. Its head is shaped like a massive anvil: flat on top, with a round pointed end to the rear and a square, blunt foreword prow (see photo of anvil). Beneath the anvil is a pair of sunken eyes and a jaw shaped like an exaggerated set of lineman’s pliers (see photo of pliers).
• It has long arms, almost ape-like using its fists as front legs, walking with the resemblance of a gorilla.
• Its teeth are chisel-shaped (used for shaving rocks, which it eats).
• It has six toes on its feet: four facing forward, two facing rear.
• Arms are long, almost ape-like. Its hands have three fingers and one thumb.
A few notes regarding the Gurgurran (monster):
I've added two photos to better demonstrate what I had in mind for the shape of the monster's skull and jaw (a classic anvil for the skull, lineman's pliers for the jaw). Comments are included for all photos.
Basically: it's a mountain-dwelling beast which eats rocks--so its teeth are for scraping and its jaw is for crushing. It's a tough beast.
Its skin, I imagined to be more like a rhino's hide with sparse hair/fur (not shaggy fur covered like a yeti or ape).
With respect to the oil rig photo, for scale the dog house (the small building with the Ensign company logo on its side) is about 15-17 feet off the ground. As the Gurgurran is just 9 feet tall, it might be best to have the rig further in the background (or in any case, not have the Gurgurran taller than the rig's dog house).
