How LehighValleyReads started their character or mascot journey
Who are you known as?
Lehigh Valley Reads
What industry do you think your business is most related to?
Community & Non-Profit
Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton, PA area United Way and PBS39 television have partnered with 17 area school districts to help increase grade level reading skills for area third grade students. Currently, one on three Lehigh Valley students are not reading at grade level by third grade. This campaign will support the school districts, equip parents and mobilize the community.
What inspires you and how do you envision the design for your business?
We're looking for a fun and clever but not too juvenile or childish character/mascot who will appeal to third graders as well as their parents, teachers and the program sponsors. Besides appearing on the web and in printed materials and promotional items, i.e. hats, t-shirts, banners, etc, we're hoping to develop this character into a full-size mascot. Please keep in mind additional drawings will be needed for different applications after contest close so there is added income potential with this project. Animation is a possibility.
Attached you'll find our very stiff, corporate-looking clip-art version of "Corey": a halved green apple with seeds for eyes and a warm smile. That's your foundation. Now, does Corey need a torso or will arms and legs extending from his head make due? Does Corey need teeth? Should Corey be 2D or 3D? That's where we need you! Surprise us, wow us! Please feel free to provide multiple poses but don't include actual books as part of your work. This is a reading initiative but the focus is not on books themselves. Also, no need to include design work on the name "Lehigh Valley Reads" unless you're really feeling something.
