We're a medium sized church of mostly middle-to-upper class white people in central Austin. Probably 65% of people are 50+, but we're growing with younger families and want to continue that trend. Re-branding is part of that effort. Particularly, our neighborhood continues to draw in young families who move to Austin to work in the tech industry. We want to appeal to them, but we also don't want to alienate long-standing members. Therefore, a successful design needs to chart a middle path between a classic and trendy aesthetic. Our most distinguishing characteristic from an aesthetic point of view is that our church is on Greenbelt property in Austin, meaning that our property is surrounded and shaded by giant Live Oak trees and hiking trails that lead to a big creek. The church is built into the landscape in a unique way--our belltower and many church walls are texas limestone, the sanctuary is lit by skylights and the chapel has glass walls that look out into the forest. Outdoorsy, Austinite vibe. Other than the Live Oak tree, the other image to play with is that of a lion. The Lion is the traditional symbol for St. Mark. I've uploaded a copy of our current logo.
I'm open to designs that combine both a lion and a live oak tree; however, from a design perspective, I think a better bet is to choose just one or the other. There does not need to be a cross in the logo. Logo should be able to function in B&W if needed. Also, the logo mark should be able to stand alone apart from the name. I've also attached some screenshots of images that I like from dribbble to give some inspiration.
