The train climbed 26 miles and 4,000 feet into the mountains. For the people aboard, spectacular vistas unfolded, accompanied by moments of exhilaration while crossing wooden trestles. The railroad was known as “the cloudclimbing route” because at this high altitude the train often passed through the clouds. Cloud-Climbing Railroad, became well-known not to mention its destination "in the clouds". In addition, at the time of its completion, it was the highest standard-gauge track in the world. The line offered both freight and passenger excursion service, often transporting movie stars and other famous guests 6,000 feet upwards into the grand mountains. 58 wooden bridges were constructed, including one "S" bridge (formed by two reverse curves) at a length of 338 feet.
Old Wooten was the last stop for water, before the Trestle train proceeded up to Cloudcroft. Catherine Yard Haile remembers the train come down in the morning as a passenger train, and it went up at noon as a passenger train, but at night it came down loaded with logs. Wooten said, "They put that pip there, asked me for water there for engine purposes and I told them that they could run the water there for engine purposes but for no other and Mr offered me a dollar and I told him I didn't want his dollar."
