The Wilderness Within
John Claude Smith
A sentient forest infiltrates the minds of two writers, horror specialist Frank Harlan Marshall and magic realist Derek Gray, one of whom has a hidden history of murder. The infiltration manipulates thoughts into reality, as real people (comedian Izzy Horenstein and musicians Aleister Blut and Alethea) and fictional people (serial killer, Average Joe) gain foothold in the harsh psychological terrain of the madness that unfolds. The insanity includes the transformation of Derek into a tree, the creation of an axe-armed monster, and the devious participation of many peripheral characters sculpted from the warped minds and memories of the two writers.
Readers of horror and transgressive fiction.
Book cover type
The novel centres around a tree, so it's important to showcase that on the cover. It could be incorporated like a back tattoo (a similar idea is the included cover for Clive Barker's Books of Blood) or more like the included cover of Shadows and Tall Trees. We are open to any concept with a transgressive horror feel.
It all began with a design brief.
A quick, interactive guide helped them understand their design style and captured exactly what they needed in their book cover.
Designers across the globe delivered design magic.
JournalStone collaborated with designers to refine their ideas
When design entries come in, you can rate them so designers know what you’re looking for in your logo design.
99designs has great collaboration tools so you can pinpoint and capture your ideas
And then… they selected a winner!
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
