Mayank Saxena got their new book cover by running a design contest:
Make a Book Cover to end the notion that actors have to choose between money and their dreams

Entertainment & The Arts
Teaching financial literacy to actors so they can pursue their dreams while taking care of their financial future. Looking for a simplistic, yet creative design that encompasses the crux of the book, "Don't Be a Broke Actor! Create Financial Freedom while Pursuing Your Dreams". It will contain useful information for actors who know nothing about saving for their future, all with a touch of my humor and stories. I want to alleviate suffering that is avoidable with financial planning. Help me eliminate this idea that people who follow their dreams have to live a hard life!
What's your vision?
- Target readers are actors - Business-y, but not too much as these are for artists - I like clean, crisp designs, light/white backdrop with colors that POP/bleed (am open to background being another color scheme if design's good =) - You can be creative in terms of how you interpret the cover - but should be obvious it's for actors - Book cover is 9x6 - Include receiving a layered PSD file in hi-res (300dpi) - Include 1 or 2 revisions - No Cartoons - No images that are pulled off the web for which I'd have to pay a licensing fee (no stock images) - No dollar bills, or sad actors - am trying to avoid the self-help book "look" (i.e. those generic arms stretching towards the sky, jumping off a plane/cliff, fists clasped towards the heavens... BORING) - I'm trying to go with a best seller feel, like a bestselling book at a bookstore!
These are just ideas, I am NOT married to them - they just "came" to me, so I'm throwing them out there (I'll add more as I think of them. Again, these are just my ideas - maybe yours is better!): 1. I saw this ad (attached) in the NYC subway, and was thinking the person could be looking up at their future or the title of the book, with one hand holding a drama mask, and the other maybe holding a briefcase (to signify choosing one over the other?). 2. A bank statement or bill on one side of a desk, and a highlighted script on the other, with a hand either reaching for one over the other, or shuffling between the two 3. Someone graffiting "Don't Be a Broke Actor!" outside a theater or a construction wall (post no bills), something to that affect? 4. Title & Subitle on top, with a close-up image of an Oscar Award in a cardboard box along with other personal stuff. Like someone's moving or lost a job, and even though they have an Oscar, it didn't guarantee the stable money life

Designers across the globe delivered design magic.

And then… they selected a winner!
Ryan was the first designer to submit a design in my competition and produced a design that absolutely nailed the design brief. His understanding of the design brief, quality and timing of delivery were exceptional. Ryan has produced what I believe is a fabulous book cover for my first book. Much gratitude and respect.
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
