ftfarber got their new book cover by running a design contest:
Design a book cover for a contemporary YA novel: "Ice Queen"
Check out ftfarber's Book cover contest…
I enjoy writing in many different genres. I have authored picture books, chapter books, a young adult novel and a legal thriller, as well as the biography of a Holocaust survivor. I am interested in self-publishing my YA novel because my literary agent has not been able to sell it.
Ice Queen, a contemporary YA novel, is a vindictive sexting story that pits 16- year-old high school outcast Blair Evans against the class mean girl, Krystal Cooper [the Ice Queen.] When Blair ends up with the Ice Queen’s ex-boyfriend, David Woods [high school soccer and ice hockey jock], she is thrust into the midst of a cyber-war with her archrival who tries to seduce David back and plays dirty getting Blair arrested for sexting using a racy photo of her taken off of David’s cell phone. When Blair finally works out a plea deal with the prosecutor, new sexting photos of her materialize, derailing any hope of working out a deal with prosecutors. The only way to defend herself is to figure out who took the new explicit photos … and how. Blair’s diverse set of friends form super-sleuth group C-6 to help her solve the sexting mystery. But if their crazy plan doesn’t work, she’s headed for jail.
Teens between 12 and 18, both girls and boys since the book is written in the POVs of both Blair and David
Book cover type
I envision the title Ice Queen to be in an ice crystal font and the cover should incorporate a cell phone somewhere in it. Possible cover ideas are to have Krystal sitting on an ice throne holding a cell phone, a love triangle image with Blair & David up front and Krystal in the background, or a cell phone cracking out of ice with a very blurry image of Blair in a hot pink lacy bra & panties set on the screen –-for this cover option the title would need to be a dark color to be visible over the ice background. I am also open to any interpretation of the information I provided but wanted to plant some seeds for inspiration. Here are descriptions of the main characters: Blair is thin & pretty w/ light blue eyes, a smattering of freckles and long curly reddish-blond hair. The Ice Queen has shoulder-length straight dark hair, lots of makeup and big boobs, and is always surrounded by a posse of nameless followers. David is handsome & fit with dark wavy hair and chocolate-brown eyes with honey-gold specks.

Richi the best is an amazing designer. Their first design wasn’t what I was looking for, but after some brief suggestions, they created a completely new design that ended up winning the contest. They never got frustrated as I requested minuscule change after change. They patiently adjusted every little aspect of the design until I was completely satisfied. They did everything they could for me as the customer, and I’m astounded by the quality of my professional-level cover. Thanks so much Richi the best.
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
