David Wheeler got their new app by running a design contest:
Image Design for Android App for SecureComm
Check out David Wheeler's App contest…
What's your vision?
SecureComm is developing an Android App call CINCH (Cognitive and Interactive Configuration Helper) We need an Icon for the App, three PNG files, and one background image to be used in the CINCH Android App. 1) Background: Desert Camo Pattern Format: PNG Size: 160x160 or 320x320 The background image should be a desert camouflage pattern, like in use in the military (see Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_camouflage, and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MARPAT). The MARPAT is preferred, with preference to desert type pattern. The graphic should display well when tiled in a background, and blend together to create a seamless image (not create the tile-effect). The graphic should be "washed-out" slightly so that the colors are subdued and not overpowering to the images laid over the top of them. 2) Image 1: Soldier with Rifle image Format: PNG (with transparency) Size: 96X96, 48x48 An image rendering an infantry soldier carrying a rifle, in battle gear. 3) Image 2: HUMV Vehicle Format: PNG (with transparency) Size: 96X96, 48x48 An image rendering a US military vehicle, like a HUM-V, with a radio antenna 4) Image 3: Radio Format: PNG (with transparency) Size: 96X96, 48x48 An image for a JTRS Rifleman Radio, which is a handheld walkie-talkie type of radio. See attached pictures. 5) Icon: CINCH Icon Format: PNG (with transparency) Size: 96X96, 48x48 CINCH is a smartphone app the connects (tethers) to a radio and fixes the configuration. AN icon that represents this in a colorful way, perhaps with the words CINCH or SecureComm. Must be recognizable on a smartphone screen. THE ATTACHED PICTURES ARE FOR REFERENCE ONLY. SECURECOMM DOES NOT HAVE RIGHTS TO REPRODUCE OR USE THOSE IMAGES.
The App will be demo'ed to military personnel, so realistic (but not photo) images are important. If the quality of these images are good, there are other icons and animations we need for the App, that we would be willing to contract out as well for an additional fee.

When design entries come in, you can rate them so designers know what you’re looking for in your logo design.
99designs has great collaboration tools so you can pinpoint and capture your ideas
And then… they selected a winner!
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
